Tinubu has assigned a special investigator to examine the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and its affiliated entities.

President Bola Tinubu has appointed a Special Investigator to conduct a thorough inquiry into the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and its related entities as part of the ongoing anti-corruption efforts. In a letter dated July 28, 2023, addressed to Jim Osayande Obazee, the Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), President Tinubu formally appointed him for this crucial role.

While the complete terms of his assignment will be communicated later, the President's letter instructed Obazee to take immediate action to curb any further financial leakages from the CBN, ensure transparency and accountability, and strengthen key government business entities. The Special Investigator is required to report directly to the President and submit a comprehensive report on the extent of public wealth held by corrupt individuals and establishments, whether in the private or public sector.

The letter emphasized that the appointment is in accordance with Section 15(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), emphasizing the administration's commitment to combating corruption.

As part of the investigation process, the Special Investigator is expected to work with a competent and experienced team while collaborating with relevant security and anti-corruption agencies to ensure the success of the assignment. President Tinubu expressed the need for weekly briefings on the progress of the investigation.

In addition to the appointment, the letter included a directive suspending the Governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele, from office since June 30, 2023. Emefiele had been in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS) and was granted bail last week but has yet to be released.
