Nigerian govt to amend Cybercrime Act – NSA, Nuhu Ribadu


The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has stated that the Federal Government is actively working on amending the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 to protect the nation's cyberspace from the growing attacks by criminals. He emphasized the importance of establishing a sustainable cybersecurity system in achieving the goals of the Sustainable Development 2030 Agenda.

During the 2-Day 2023 Cyber Secure Nigeria Conference organized by the Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria (CSEAN) in Abuja, Ribadu revealed that inputs from various stakeholders, including artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual assets, are being considered in the amendment process.

Ribadu, represented by Dr. Bala Fakandu, the Manager of Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT), highlighted the Federal Government's recognition of cybersecurity incidence management and the protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) as crucial components of national development. He mentioned that the awaited Presidential Order on the Designation and Protection of CNII would further enhance Nigeria's efforts in achieving economic prosperity, national development, and national security objectives. The NSA stressed the importance of continuous cybersecurity awareness due to the increasing cyber threats from both state and non-state actors.

Regarding the conference, Ribadu praised the Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria (CSEAN) for its dedication and continuous efforts in advancing cybersecurity in the country. He described the conference's theme, "Cybersecurity: A Digital Transformative Tool in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals," as relevant and significant.
