Gang convicted of honeytrap murder as man seeking encounters is attacked.
Upon entering Gohel's flat, he found the victim lifeless on the bedroom floor, with gaffer tape around his lower face. A post-mortem examination revealed severe head injuries, including brain damage, fractured voice box, and bruising to his scalp, eyes, and jaw. The flat had been tidied in an attempt to erase evidence, and Gohel's iPhone and iWatch were stolen.
The three men involved were Tevin Leslie, Sakeen Gordon, and Brandon Browne. Leslie was convicted of murder and admitted to conspiracy to rob, while Gordon was convicted of murder and conspiracy to rob by a majority decision. Browne, on the other hand, was acquitted of murder but found guilty of manslaughter and conspiracy to rob. Among the women, Yarley Georgia Bruce-Annan was convicted of murder and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to rob, while Faith Hoppie was acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter and conspiracy to rob. Tiana Edwards Hancock was cleared of murder, manslaughter, and conspiracy to rob.
Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Gohel had been in contact with Bruce-Annan through the online marketplace website, Craig's List, on the day of the incident. The women traveled from Barking to Bushey, arriving in the early morning hours, while the men arrived later in a vehicle driven by Leslie. The events were part of a premeditated plan.
Earlier in the day, Gohel had been captured on CCTV purchasing alcohol, soft drinks, cigarettes, and condoms from a convenience store near his home. He had withdrawn cash and borrowed money from his mother. Items such as his iWatch, cash, and iPhone were stolen, and no attempts were made to seek help for the victim.
The three men and two women were remanded in custody for sentencing, scheduled for September 26. The judge excused the jurors, who had been deliberating for over 21 hours, from jury service for the next 10 years.
