Disney Star Coco Lee commits su!cide


Actress and singer Coco Lee, known for her role as the Mandarin voice of Mulan in Disney's "Mulan," has been tragically confirmed to have died by suicide. According to her sisters, Carol and Nancy, Coco made an attempt at her home on Sunday, July 2, and was subsequently hospitalized. Despite efforts to save her life, she slipped into a coma and passed away on Wednesday, July 5.


Coco had been battling depression for several years, and her family revealed that despite seeking professional help, her condition worsened significantly in recent months, leading to her decision to take her own life.


Aside from her notable involvement with Disney, Coco had a successful career as a singer spanning three decades. She performed the Oscar-nominated song "A Love Before Time" in the film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." Born in Hong Kong, Coco attended middle school and high school in San Francisco, where she was crowned Miss Teen Chinatown in 1991.


Coco achieved a significant milestone as the first Chinese singer to gain prominence in the United States, with her song "Do You Want My Love" reaching No. 4 on Billboard's Hot Dance Breakout chart in 1999.


Her family fondly remembers Coco for her relentless efforts to pave the way for Chinese singers in the international music scene, describing her as someone who passionately represented China and worked tirelessly to bring Chinese talent into the spotlight.
