A day after receiving divorce papers, a man fatally harms his spouse, just six months after they tied the knot.
In February 2023, the couple got married. However, things took a turn when Alicia served Marcus with divorce papers on August 16, 2023. Unverified reports circulating online suggest that this action was triggered by Marcus's alleged involvement in an extramarital relationship with another man.
Legal documents reveal that Alicia had obtained a protective order against her husband back in May, following Marcus's arrest for domestic violence against her.
On August 17, 2023, the Grand Rapids police received a report of gunshots in the vicinity of Adams Street and Union Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered Alicia's lifeless body next to a house. An affidavit indicates that Alicia had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her head and body. Law enforcement quickly identified Marcus Durayalle Lofton, Alicia's husband, as the prime suspect.
On Friday, August 18, Marcus was formally charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He remains incarcerated without bail.
During police interrogations, Marcus claimed that on August 16, Alicia had served him with divorce papers and informed him of her intention to sell their house. On the morning of August 17, he reportedly made contact with her at the Union Avenue residence. An altercation ensued, during which he allegedly seized Alicia's Glock pistol from a drawer and attempted to use it against her. He stated that the gun discharged accidentally. Alicia then retreated to a bedroom and locked herself inside.
According to the affidavit, Marcus forcibly entered the room and found Alicia attempting to escape through a window. Marcus Lofton purportedly admitted to shooting Alicia multiple times before fleeing the scene in his maroon SUV.
Marcus is set to appear in a Michigan court again on September 5 for a preliminary hearing.
