Tinubu appeals to Reps, requests N500bn for subsidy support and palliatives.

President Bola Tinubu has sent a letter to the National Assembly, urging an amendment to the 2022 supplementary appropriation Act. The purpose of the amendment is to enable the Federal Government to secure N500 billion for palliative measures aimed at mitigating the impact of subsidy removal on Premium Motor Spirit (petrol). The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, read Tinubu's letter during the plenary session, titled 'Request for the amendment of the 2022 appropriation act.'

Tinubu states that the funds will be sourced from the 2022 supplementary Appropriation Act, which amounts to N819.5 billion. In the letter, he specifically requests the approval of the House of Representatives for the amendment, citing the necessity of providing palliatives to alleviate the consequences of the recent fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians. The amount of N500 billion has been designated from the N819.536 billion allocated in the 2022 supplementary appropriation act to facilitate the provision of these palliatives. Tinubu expresses hope that the House of Representatives will consider his request.

It is worth noting that this request comes approximately six weeks after Tinubu publicly declared the end of petroleum subsidy payments.
