A Nigerian man has been arrested in India for pretending to be an American doctor on a matrimonial site and defrauding a woman.
A Nigerian national, identified as Peter Johnson from Lajpat Nagar in New Delhi, has been arrested by the Chandigarh cyber-crime police for allegedly deceiving a woman of ₹2.91 lakh under the pretence of marriage.
The arrest was made after a complaint was filed by a woman from Sector 39 B. The accused approached the victim through a matrimonial website. Police seized 26 mobile phones, 15 SIM cards, and 27 ATM cards from the accused.
The victim, who is a mother pursuing a divorce case, was contacted by the accused, who posed as Vipan from Texas in America and claimed to be a doctor. The caller convinced her to marry him and extracted her passport details. He then concocted a story about excess items brought by Vipan, and a person claiming to be a police officer named Shikha extorted money from the victim to release these items. The victim transferred the money, only to realize she had been deceived.
She filed a complaint with the cyber police, leading to the arrest of Peter Johnson on June 23 in Delhi. During the investigation, the authorities recovered the mobile phone used in the crime, as well as additional mobile phones, SIM cards, and ATM cards.
