Buhari summons IGP over Shiites, police clash
President Muhammadu Buhari has met with the Inspector General of
Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, after the police and individuals of the Islamic
Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also acknowledged as Shiites, clashed once more on
Monday in Abuja.
The president, in a closed-door meeting with the police chief, ordered that
steps be taken to forestall such breakdown of law and order, the IGP said.
The conflict on Monday left cars and a sub-station of the National Emergency
Management Agency (NEMA) at the federal secretariat, Abuja, on fire.
Mr. Adamu informed journalists at the end of the meeting that he was summoned
to provide the president a briefing on the Shiites’ protests.
“We got here this morning to brief Mr. President on the security state of
affairs in the country, specifically the things to do of the Islamic Movement
of Nigeria (IMN). Just to supply him an update on what is going on in the
country by their activities.
“Specifically we briefed him of the incessant act coming out of this crew of
people, protesting here and there. We briefed him on the fact that we have been
able to curtail their excesses and to let him recognize that everything is
under control,” the Inspector general of police said.
“The president asked us to make sure we supply safety for every citizen of this
country and not to leave any area that some group of humans will create a
breakdown of regulation and order.
“So, the charge via Mr. President is that we need to grant security for every
Nigerian.”
