N100 BRIBE: Army dismisses soldier after killing Abia motorcyclist over bribe

The 82nd Division of the Nigerian Army fired Ajayi Johnson for allegedly killing a commercial motorcyclist, Chimaobi Nwogu, in Umoukereke Ngwa in the Obingwa Local Government Area in Abia State.

The division's deputy spokesman, Aliyu Yusuf, announced this in a statement on Wednesday.

Yusuf said Johnson had been handed over to police in Abia to be prosecuted.

The soldier on August 7 shot Nwaogu for reportedly failing to pay an N100 bribe at a military checkpoint.

The army, on August 10, validated that the motorcyclist was killed via a soldier after originally denying responsibility, saying Nwogu may have been killed through a worshiper wearing a military T-shirt.
Yusuf said the soldier was tried in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Nigerian Army that still exist and were reduced to personal rank before being dismissed from duty.

"He, hereby, is officially handed over to the Nigerian Police, Abia state command today on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 for further action needed. The Division will not condone the violation of the law and the unprofessional conduct of its personnel, and wherever that happens, strict action will be taken against the guilty personnel," the statement said.
