My Breastfeeding Experience
Today, i'll like to share my breastfeeding experience with you. By the way, i'm a first time mum (FTM) and during my antenatal days, we were taught on the importance of breastfeeding and how it is the best food for babies and we were also advice on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, which is a period of 6 months without water or formula, strictly breast milk.
Breastfeeding also has its challenges but nobody tells you about that, all you hear is just the benefit of breastfeeding and once you are not able to complete the 6 months exclusive breastfeeding period, people will begin to look at you as a bad mother SMH. I have come to understand that breastfeeding takes a lot of determination and hard work and there are some babies that need more than breast milk, especially babies that feed a lot. Some mothers are advised from the hospital to supplement in order to avoid starving their babies. I believe breastfeeding should be a personal choice. No one else should be able to tell a mother what her relationship with her child should be. which includes the feeding relationship. But, people still act as surprised when children are nursed beyond a few months. Often the mother will start feeling pressure to either defend her decision or to stop altogether.
When my baby came, i was so excited and eager to breastfeed him immediately but unfortunately for me, the breast milk didn't start to flow immediately and my baby needed to feed so the need for formula arose. for the first two days of life, my new born was made to feed on formula after which i started breastfeeding and i intend breastfeeding him exclusively for 6 months and then as long as possible when he starts eating other foods.
i'm in my fourth month, and i will give you guys an update after the sixth months. bare in mind i'm a working mum.
... To be continued!
