INEC insists on PVC for governorship elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission in Plateau state has insisted on the use of permanent voter cards against the appeal of the gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Gyang Pwajok, for temporary voter cards to be allowed in the April 11 polls.
Mr. Pwajok, last Thursday, appealed to the Chairman of INEC, Attahiru Jega, to allow Nigerians with temporary voter cards vote using manual voters’ register during the gubernatorial and state Houses of Assembly elections.
Mr. Pwajok, addressing journalists in Jos, pointed out that the card reader machines used during the Presidential and National Assembly elections had come with lots several challenges, thereby disenfranchising many electorates.
He called on the commission to discard the use of card readers during the next elections.
The INEC spokesperson in Plateau state, Osaretin Imahiyereobo, in a press release to journalists on Thursday in Jos, insisted that the commission would not permit the use of temporary voters’ card.
Mr. Imahiyereobo also stated that the faults with the card readers in the state have been addressed.
“The commission had reviewed the operation of the card reader in the March 28 elections, identified the challenges and has taken adequate measures to address them,” he said.
Most card readers deployed to Plateau state during the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Plateau state did not function well during the polls.
Meanwhile, the commission last Tuesday took delivery of electoral materials.
